A SHORT CELLO HISTORY

This instrument, which represents the bass of the violin family, appeared shortly after this one, around 1560. In fact, the bass of the viola da braccio, built by the Amati, Gasparo da Saló and Maggini in the last decades of the century XVI are real cellos, whose form, derived from the violin, distinguishes them from the basses of the other families of bow instruments.
Although his appearance is almost contemporary with that of the violin, the cello took much longer to impose since he had to endure for a long time the tenacious competition of the bass of viola da gamba.

The first music specifically dedicated to the solo cello was written in Italy around 1689 (Ricercari e canzoni, by Domenico Gabrielli, and Sonare, by Jacchini). You have to get to Beethoven for this instrument to be appreciated in its just merit in the orchestra.
